How to set up reaction roles (self-roles) in Discord

Self-roles let members pick roles themselves: which games they play, their pronouns, their region, a name colour, or which announcements they want to be pinged for. They save your staff time and make channels feel personal.

Option 1: Discord's Onboarding

If your server is a Community server, Discord's Onboarding (Server Settings → Onboarding) can ask new members questions when they join and give roles from their answers. It's good for first impressions, but members can't easily change their answers later, and it only appears when they join.

Option 2: a role menu (buttons or a drop-down)

A role menu is a message in a channel like #roles that members can use any time. Buttons are best for a handful of roles; a drop-down is tidier for lots. With Wisp:

  1. Make the roles first in Server Settings → Roles. Keep them below Wisp's own role in the list, or Wisp can't hand them out.
  2. On the Wisp dashboard, open Role menus and press Add.
  3. Pick the channel, write a title and description, and choose Buttons or Drop-down menu.
  4. Add each role with a label and an emoji. For colour or region roles, switch on Only one role at a time.
  5. Press Publish. Members press a button to get a role and press it again to remove it.

Ideas for role menus

  • Games: one role per game, so people can find teammates and you can make game channels visible only to those roles.
  • Pings: 'Events', 'Giveaways', 'Streams', so people only get notified about what they care about.
  • Pronouns and regions, to help people get to know each other.
  • Colours, with 'Only one role at a time' switched on.

Keep it safe

Never put a role with powerful permissions (like Manage Messages or Administrator) in a self-role menu. Wisp refuses to hand those out, even if someone adds one by mistake.

Do it in one press

Wisp's Friends & community setup switches on everything in this guide, with good settings, and makes the channels it needs.

Questions

Why are buttons better than emoji reactions?

Buttons are clearer, work better on phones, can show a confirmation, and don't break if someone removes reactions from the message.

Why can't the bot give a role?

The bot's own role must be higher in the role list than the role it's giving, and the role can't have dangerous permissions.
