How to make a welcome message (and welcome cards) on Discord
The first few seconds in a new server decide whether someone stays. A warm, personal welcome tells them they're in the right place and where to go next.
Discord's built-in welcome
Discord can post a simple system message when someone joins (Server Settings → Overview → System Messages Channel), with a 'Wave to say hi' button. It's friendly, but you can't change the words, add a picture or give roles.
A custom welcome message with a card
- Make a #welcome channel that new members can see.
- On the Wisp dashboard, open Welcome & goodbye and pick that channel.
- Write your message. Use {user} to mention them, {server} for your server's name and {membercount} for their member number.
- Keep Welcome card picture on, and choose a title, subtitle and accent colour. The live preview shows exactly what members will see.
- Add Roles for new members so they get access straight away, then save.
What to put in a welcome message
- Their name (with {user}), so it feels personal.
- Where to go first: rules, roles, an introductions channel.
- One line about what makes your server special.
- Keep it short. Two or three lines is plenty.
Extra touches
- A welcome DM with your rules and links (switch on Also DM them).
- Goodbye messages, so your community notices when people leave.
- Verification first, if you get a lot of bots: members get their roles once they've verified.
Wisp's Friends & community setup switches on everything in this guide, with good settings, and makes the channels it needs.

Can I make a welcome card without a bot?
You can design one image with our free welcome card maker, but to make one for every new member automatically with their name and avatar, you need a bot like Wisp.
