How to protect your Discord server from raids

A raid is when lots of accounts (usually bots or alts) join at once to spam, ping everyone or post shock content. They're over in minutes, so the protection has to be in place before it starts.

Before a raid: Discord's settings

  • Verification level (Server Settings → Safety Setup): 'Medium' (registered for 5 minutes) or 'High' (member for 10 minutes) stops brand-new accounts from talking straight away.
  • Turn off @everyone and @here for normal members in each channel's permissions.
  • Turn on Discord's AutoMod spam and mention-spam filters.
  • Use invite links that expire, and remove old permanent invites.

Automatic raid detection

Raids happen while you're asleep, so it helps to have something watching. With Wisp's Anti-raid:

  1. Choose how many joins in how many seconds counts as a raid (10 in 10 seconds is a good start for most servers).
  2. Pick what happens: alert your mods, alert and lock every channel, or alert and kick everyone who joined in the flood.
  3. Optionally kick accounts younger than a few days as they join.
  4. Pick a private alert channel for your mods.

During a raid

  • Lock the server: /lockdown start stops everyone talking in every channel at once.
  • Delete the spam: /purge can delete up to 100 recent messages, or only messages from one person.
  • Ban the raid accounts, and check your invites to see which one they used.

After a raid

  • /lockdown end unlocks exactly the channels that were locked, and leaves your private channels as they were.
  • Tell your members what happened and that it's sorted.
  • Raise your verification level for a few days, as raiders often come back.

Questions

Will anti-raid lock my server when a big streamer sends people?

It can, if lots of people join at once. If that's likely, choose 'Alert the mods' instead of locking, or raise the number of joins needed.
