How to set up logs on Discord (deleted messages, edits and more)

When something goes wrong in a server, the first question is 'what happened?'. Logs give your staff the answer, even after a message has been deleted.

Discord's audit log

Server Settings → Audit Log shows actions like bans, kicks, role changes and channel edits, and who did them. But it doesn't show the content of deleted or edited messages, and it only keeps entries for a limited time.

Full logging with a bot

  1. Make a private #server-logs channel that only staff can see.
  2. On the Wisp dashboard, open Logs, switch it on and pick that channel.
  3. Choose what to log: deleted and edited messages, joins and leaves, role and nickname changes, bans, channel and role changes, voice and invites.
  4. Add busy or private channels to Don't log these channels if you like.

What logs help with

  • Seeing what a deleted message said before someone reports it.
  • Spotting alt accounts: joins show how old an account is.
  • Checking who changed a role or channel.
  • Settling 'they edited their message' arguments, with the before and after.

Do it with Wisp

Keep a record of deleted and edited messages, joins and leaves, role and nickname changes, bans, channel changes and voice activity in your Discord server.

Questions

Do logs store messages somewhere else?

With Wisp, logs are posted only to your own log channel. Wisp doesn't keep its own copy of your messages.
