How to make your Discord server more active

Quiet servers aren't usually a people problem: they're a reasons-to-talk problem. These ideas give members easy reasons to post, and reasons to come back tomorrow.

Make the first minute count

  • Welcome every new member by name, with a welcome card.
  • Point them to one easy first action: introduce yourself, pick your roles.
  • Fewer channels. Five busy channels beat twenty empty ones.

Give people a reason to post every day

  • A daily question in #general (scheduled messages can post it for you).
  • A counting channel: simple, oddly addictive.
  • Levels and a leaderboard, with roles to unlock.
  • A starboard, so good posts get celebrated.

Events and games

  • Weekly giveaways, even small ones.
  • Polls about the server's own decisions.
  • Game nights, watch parties, or study sessions in voice.
  • Birthday shout-outs.

Listen and show progress

  • A suggestions channel where members vote and staff answer.
  • Post what changed because of member ideas.
  • Thank active members publicly.
